Everyone at USM goes through the café for their meals throughout the day, but do the students know who is feeding them? This reporter has felt our café staff is under appreciated, so here is a little bit about the USM café staff.
The café opens every morning 7 am to 9 am for breakfast, Monday through Friday, Saturday 8:30 am to 9:30 am and for Sunday brunch 11:30 am to 1 pm. Every day the lunch staff creates new and fun lunch options for the students.
The café staff is diverse, employing students and non-students. Yaw Osei, a football player for the Spires loves his job because he “doesn’t have to pay for a meal plan,” which is a great benefit of working in the café. Considering that some students are required to have a position, working in the café is a great way to make money and save on tuition.
Creating new food ideas everyday can be tricky to keep it interesting. Chef Chris Asbury has been working in the café for a year now and his favorite place is the action station, which is a new bar full of different options every day. “I get to make new stuff every day, and the kids love it,” he said.
The staff at USM works hard, making lunch for not only the students, but for the sisters on campus as well. Laundra Earty has been working here at USM for a year and three months and appreciates that “the students make me feel welcome, and make me feel happy and grateful to come to work every day.”
Whether you are grabbing breakfast, stopping in for lunch or finishing off your day with dinner, make sure to say thank you to your USM café staff for all the hard work they do every day.
