As the leaves fall off the trees and the clocks fall back, you see winter approaching. Around the University of Saint Mary, fall sports are ending and it’s time for Spires to jump into winter sports. The women’s varsity basketball team began their 2018-2019 season on Nov. 2nd against Benedictine College and Baker University in the KCAC-HAAC Classic.

The Lady Spires fell against Benedictine College by 8 points, with a final score of 84-76. Overall, the Spires led the way the entire first half and then quickly let Benedictine sneak back into the game after fouling before halftime, losing the half 39-37. The Spires battled all second half but came up short.

Head Coach Katelyn Loecker tweeted after the game on Friday, “Not the outcome we wanted, but very proud of our effort tonight. Got to study film and get back to work!”

Following the game on Friday, the Lady Spires try to bounce back on Saturday against Baker University. The Spires came up short on the final game of the round robin, falling 74-60 to Baker. Although, the Spires did out rebound Baker 45-43.

Sophomore point guard Danielle Cassidy said, “Coming off our first two games with losses is hard but it also shows us what we need to work on for our next games. Through film and practice we are able to learn from our mistakes and make those adjustments for our upcoming games.”

The University of Saint Mary women’s basketball team started their season 0-2, but it is still very early in the season. The Spires keep working hard to rebound back on November 7th, where they play Cottey College at 5:30 PM in Nevada, Missouri.

Later in the week, the Lady Spires will take on D2 Rockhurst University on Saturday at 6:00 PM in Kansas City. The Lady Spires are just getting started, continue to support them throughout their 2018 season. Check for Spire updates on Twitter @USM_JCOM.
