Saint Mary Women’s Basketball Team has been working hard all preseason to prepare. Things didn’t go as planned when they fell short to the first 3 teams they met to start the season. Needless to say they have had  a rough start to their season. Their record was 0-4 going into York.  They travel a whopping 4 hours to York, Nebraska. Maybe the Lady Spires were fed up or maybe it was luck. Regardless they managed to snag their first conference win Monday night. The score was 49-42 ending the 4 game losing streak and giving them a much need conference win.

Their were some key players that definitely help the Spire’s pull out the win. A lot of spectators overlook things that don’t end up on a stat sheet or count as a bucket. However, Rachel  Newquist had three major charges in the 4th quarter that really help shift the momentum of the game. Those charges really sparked things up for the Spire’s and help them rally the win.

Other things that contributed were how hard the Lady Spire’s fought back. Paige Scheckel contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds, Sophomore Bailey Massoth and Junior Lexi Schamberger had big time 3’s that helped seal the deal. Head Coach Katelyn Loecker said, “We told the girls that there are areas we need to fix and improve on, but overall I’m happy with how they fought through the adversity and came out on top.” They got down in the game by as much as 10 and still didn’t give up. The game was close but ultimately they pulled out a win.

Looking forward they 3 more games to finish out the semester. Hopefully they will be able to turn this win into something and get their season going full speed ahead.
